1st Rees’ - What an outstandingly well
balanced pair of bitches these two are. They stood shoulder to
shoulder and moved as if they were perfectly synchronised with
minimal input required by the handler.
2nd Fox’s - Unlucky to come up against
the winners on the day. Not quite as balanced and harmonised as
the 1st placed. 3rd Donnelly’s
Gary Whiting (Spenbeck)
BITCHES:
...It was indeed an honour to be asked to judge
at this most prestigious breed open show and I thank the exhibitors
for the sporting way they accepted my awards.
Initially, I looked at five areas for consideration:
...1. I tried to go for what I believe is good type reflected
by the breed standard- Surprisingly I thought type was a little
varied.
...2. Correct construction as befit’s a working gundog.
- Quite early on it became evident that shoulders/ upper arms
length/angulation and weak hocks would be deciding factors in
this area.
...3. The above would impact on breed specific movement.
...4. Condition and muscle tone
...5. Star Quality
...I found the bitches to be varied a little in size with some
clearly looking at the top side of the height standard to say
the least.
I had fixed in my mind the dimensions of the breed and found that
time and time again I was placing bitches quite highly, which
in my humble opinion were a little long in body to be ideal, though
historically we have always forgiven the extra length in bitches
in some gundog breeds, because of the room needed to carry puppies
and I found myself making a compromise, when the movement element
came into the equation.
...I loved the splendid heads which are such a unique feature
of this breed, with just one or two which I felt bordering on
being a little bit too narrow. I loved the breeds beautiful eye
and true expression, certainly for me the darker the eye, the
more it blends in with the coat colour (blacks), although I took
into account the limited degree of colour variation permitted
in the standard.
...The superb temperament on display is another really important
feature of this breed with that ever wagging tail. It must give
all owners of the breed quite a positive feeling of having something
really special on the end of the lead, a real gem.
The general condition of the bitches was excellent, but one or
two were a little overweight.
...In the final analysis I wanted to see balance and everything
flowing harmoniously together, with this regard I think the silhouette
of the breed is another one of its important aspects.
I was ever mindful of the hot conditions and all the bitches appeared
well and unaffected,
although my own note taking was somewhat curtailed in an effort
to spare the ordeal for the exhibitors and their charges. 63 Bitches
making an entry of 77 with 11 absentees.
...I was pleased to concur with my Co Judge Mr Ashcroft on our
principle winners, BIS Hargreaves Strollers Gift to Forgeway JW
and our Reserve Best in show and Best opposite sex winner Hewison’s
Harvest Moon at Castelblaidd. Best Puppy was Bott Torrweaving
Black Jack, reserve Best puppy was Forsters Wizardwood Celtic
Isle. Best Veteran was Fox’s Wintosa Sings the Blues to
Blacktoft.
Minor Puppy Bitch
(2)
...1st Lee and Holdens Innesbeck Sweet Surrender, A really pleasing
and balanced youngster, built on correct lines, very nice moulded
head and lovely expression, with good ear set, strong medium length
of neck, good shoulders, pleasing brisket, correct topline with
good tailset, straight forelegs of good oval bone with roundish
feet. she has a medium length of back and moderate hind angulation,
with short hocks, she was shown in good condition with pleasing
coat texture. A sound happy mover.
2nd Perry’s Cassenjay Silver Lady, Liver, with a really
good head and pleasing eye, medium length of neck, correct topline,
decent spring of rib, pleasing substance in forelegs, but pasterns
could be a tad stronger, not quite the all round confirmation
of the winner, but shown in good condition and coat. Moving just
like a puppy should, enjoying her day out.
Puppy bitch(1)
...1st Forsters Wizardwood Celtic Isle, Very nice youngster of
correct height to length ratios, who obviously likes her food.
She has a friendly disposition which was most appealing, Balanced
head and muzzle, nice eye shape and colour, good width between
eyes, medium length of neck, good all round confirmation, strong
but slightly angled pasterns, decent spring of rib and depth of
ribs, with moderate tuck up. Correct topline, short loin, good
width of second thigh, moderate hind angulation. Has a flat coat
of good texture and thickness. Moved very well. Has a zest for
life and no doubt a bright future. Reserve Best Puppy in show
Junior Bitch.(6) A good
class with some promising youngsters
...1st Walker and Roberts Gloi Drub Andrasta JW, Another promising
youngster with really good body proportions, balanced head with
muzzle, barely perceptible stop, ears good, set, position and
shape, with beautiful expression. Long reachy neck, very good
shoulder layback, pleasing brisket, tight elbows on the move,
straight forehand with correct bone, well sprung ribs with decent
under carriage, minimum tuck up. She has moderate hind angulation,
medium length of hocks suggesting some power, shown in good coat.
Accurate mover with good forward reach and drive, liked her head
carriage and use of tail on the move.
...2nd Buckley’s Buckleyhill Starlight, A bitch shown in
excellent condition, perhaps a shade shorter in foreleg than the
winner, but with overall good body shape, correct topline, pleasing
head shape nicely moulded, minimum stop, good reach of neck, forelegs
could be a little more under the body, short loin, strong hindquarters,
Covers the ground well, is a nice size and has overall general
quality.
...3rd Harris’s Marjosi over the Rainbow
Special yearling bitch(10)
...1st Buckleys Buckleyhill Starlight - Repeat
...2nd Baxters Polgara All that Jazz, Feminine, elegant in appearance
and racy, mature body shape, good head, neck of medium length,
correct topline, tail set and action on the move. A little bit
long for me. Covered the ground well, but not quite the strength
in hindquarters as the winner today.
Novice(8)
...1st Kings Kingsisla Gigha -3rd in a previous class. Perhaps
a shade on the cobbier side for me. Presents a clean outline,
Has excellent front assembly, correct spring of rib, but needs
to develop more in undercarriage, has good second thigh and bend
of stifle, gave a good account on the move though, well handled.
...2nd Leighs Kingsisla Bramble of Willaura, Litter sister to
winner and I could see similarities, but a taller and leggier
bitch than winner, moving with very sound movement, has good bone
would like better feet, correct topline, good depth of ribs, moderate
stifle, shown in decent coat.
...3rd TrevorsTrevorsilk Galaxy Starlet
Graduate Bitch(10)
...1st Heslops Lakemere Summer breeze, Liked the clean outline
of this bitch although perhaps a shade longer in back for me.
Has good deep ribs as a result, correct topline held well on the
move, has moderate width of chest, pleasing front and rear angulation
and is well muscled which helps. Excellent bone and feet. In between
coats, a little whispy around the under carriage. Excellent mover.
Pleasing shaped head has all the attributes in this department.
...2nd Batchelors Walnuts Tatina, Not dis-similar in type and
overall shape to my winner, with lots to like and very typical,
just not quite the strength of drive of the winner, but sound,
has mature body properties. Another really good one.
Post graduate(6)
Size was important in this class with racier rather than heavy
being an important consideration.
...1st Ormes Elmstock Whispering Tyme, Well put together, liked
her overall outline, shape and proportions, but perhaps would
like just a shade more bone to be critical. Has a very nicely
moulded head, pleasing expression, medium length of neck, strong
topline, deep chest with moderate width, good spring of rib, strong
short loin, good bend of stifle, covers the ground well in a spirited
fashion with drive, but flags her tail a little on the high side
for me, which was disappointing.
...2nd Stephani’s Walnutfarm Fleur - VHC in the previous
class - Another bitch of a good size and excellent proportions,
heavier in build than 1, a sound free mover, but thought her coat
lacked a little bit in the shiny stakes in comparison to 1, liked
the type though, good neck and shoulders good muscle tone, best
of bone and rounded feet a plus.
...3rd Eskmill Rising Moon At Ravencrag
Limit bitch(11)
...1st Collins Rainesgift Summer Tyme at Steeplehouse JW, Super
shaped bitch, good length of leg to depth of chest and excellent
length to height, sound free mover, balance with type. A combination
of strength and yet is feminine. Moves a dream covers the ground
well. Liked her head, strong neck, correct topline and angle to
croup. Has a deep chest and brisket, deep ribs with gradual spring,
short loin, medium tuck up, moderate bend of stifles, has relatively
short hocks, usually a foretaste of good hind movement and was
not disappointed.
Has a flat coat in good condition. Reserve Best bitch.
...2nd Joyces Raines Gift the Dawn of Tyme For Stranfaer JW, Half
sister on the dams side of the winner. Another typical bitch,
with lots to like, good outline, excellent head and muzzle, pleasing
expression, moderately long neck, strong topline, super bone and
feet, looked good on the move. Very close up to the winner which
I felt just had a little more star quality.
...3rd Buckleys Branchallwood Aylanfara of Bucklyhill
Open bitch(6),
...1st Hewisons Harvest Moon of Casblaidd, I liked this no nonsense
Liver, the first thing that hits you is her perfect balance, everything
blends without exaggeration, stunning outline, lovely head, muzzle,
stop and ear of correct size, shape and set ,strong shapely neck,
of good length, good shoulders, strong topline, good depth of
chest, deep ribs, strong loin, good depth of chest, has decent
hindquarters with good second thigh, on the move covered the ground
well, with good drive. Shown in correct flat coat. Best bitch,
but flagged a little later in the heat, when it came to the challenge
for BIS pleased to agree with my co judge Reserve Best in Show.
...2nd Jones Benvellyn Opal JW, Mature black, larger size and
in full coat, outstanding outline, super head properties, good
neck and shoulders, correct topline, good overall confirmation,
very positive going away with strong hind action, not quite the
same strength coming towards me. Excellent presentation and condition.
...3rd Walkers Contar Celtic Myth of Gloi Shcm.
Veteran Bitch(7)
...1st Fox’s Wistosa Sings the Blues to Blacktoft, A very
beautiful looking girl with a lovely head and expression in
tip top condition for her 91⁄2 years, super length of
neck, decent lay of shoulders, correct topline and tail set,
good ribs, moderate length of loin, and nicely angled hindquarters,
Moved quite well with a certain amount of oomph. Agreed with
my co judge best veteran in show.
...2nd Joyces Stranfaer Spruce Goose, Workmanlike, balanced
but not quite the finish in coat of the winner, but a happy
extrovert, I liked her head and expression, good body shape,
best of bone and feet, good second thigh. She can still move
well at 81⁄2 years of age.
...3rd Perry’s Casenjay MariaSpecial Veteran Bitch(1)
1st Buckleys Buckleyhill Sapphire - A lovely bitch in superb
coat and condition for her 101⁄2 years, Very nicely balanced
all through, moved with enthusiasm when the rest of us probably
could not
Special Liver Bitch
...1st Hewisons Harvest Moon of Casblaidd - Repeat
...2nd Colsons Windyhollows Floribunda - Very similar in type
to the winner, has the same free flowing balanced outline, where
everything blends well together, generally good head properties,
but perhaps a shade shorter in muzzle for perfect balance, in
comparison to the winner I found her eye a little on the large
and round side. She is very nicely constructed and as such went
well around the ring in style, with drive and forward reach.
Head carriage and use of tail in profile movement was very good
indeed. Well presented.
...3rd Forsters Wizardwood Tawny Tyne

the obedience classes at their Open Show in May and for the
